NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-3-3)

4 Krul: Got Newcastle off to a poor start by allowing Elia’s first goal in too cheaply;

3: Janmaat: Disappointing afternoon and partially to blame for both of Elia’s goals

4 Coloccini: Been given a break this week and certainly looks like he needs one

4 Dummett: Missed an easy header and never looked too comfortable when the Saints pushed on

5 Haidara: Not the return to the side he had hoped for although his cross almost led to a second goal for Gouffran in the second half;

6 Sissoko: Had an impact in the middle but not as effective in the final third as he can be

6 Anita: Ticked things over in the middle but had a tough afternoon in tracking Ward-Prowse

5 Colback: Made a few decent contributions but never at his best;

7 CABELLA: Arguably Newcastle’s best performer even though he never looked like scoring

6 Perez: Some nice touches but should have put the Magpies ahead in the first half

6 Gouffran: Scored one, albeit a lucky one, and could have had another after 13 months without a goal

Subs:

Ameobi (for Gouffran 68): Offered little to get Newcastle back in to it. 4

Riviere (for Anita 68): Had a strong shout for a penalty waved away. 5

Williamson (for Dummett 80)

(not used): Woodman (gk), Santon, Abeid, Armstrong.

SOUTHAMPTON (4-2-3-1): Forster 6; Clyne 7, Fonte 7, Gardos 5, Bertrand 6; Reed 6, S Davis 7; Ward-Prowse 7 (Cork 60, 5), Tadic 5 (Long 60, 5), Elia 8 (Targett 82); PELLE 8. Subs (not used): K Davis (gk), Isgrove, McCarthy, Hesketh.

MAN OF THE MATCH

GRAZIANO Pelle – a key part to play in both Saints goals and turned in the sort of centre-forward display which Newcastle could have done with.
