SUNDERLAND midfielder Seb Larsson admits the squad will welcome any new addition this month with the Black Cats reportedly close to signing Jermain Defoe.

The former Tottenham striker was on Wearside for discussions over a three-and-a-half year deal to the Stadium of Light yesterday evening and is understood to be undergoing a medical ahead of a move from Toronto FC this afternoon.

Black Cats head coach Gus Poyet is crying out for a goalscorer having watched his side struggle to find the back of the net this season, and Larsson admits the squad would welcome Defoe’s arrival.

“During the window, you always want to add to the squad,” the midfielder said.

“When the window closes, you’d like to have a few additions and a stronger team with more competition for places. Hopefully that’s the case.

“But I’ve been quite good about staying away from the rumours, because I didn’t know too much about that one (the Defoe one). He’s a proven goalscorer, so that’s great.

“But as I said, I haven’t heard many rumours. Maybe I’m just not watching enough telly or reading newspapers!

“Whoever might come in, we’ll welcome them and hopefully they’ll make us even better.”
