PLANS to relocate Barnard Castle’s Aviation Memorial are underway with the town council set to submit a planning application to Durham County Council.

Members of the council’s resources committee agreed to approve the £95 cost of submitting the planning application which is due to be drawn up by council clerk, Michael King, along with Councillor John Yarker and Cllr John Blissett.

It is proposed to move the memorial from its current location on land owned by the Deerbolt Young Offenders’ Institution to the Galgate Green Memorial Garden.

Almost 50 aircraft are known to have crashed in the Teesdale area with many of them dating back to the first and second world wars and all are commemorated in the town’s annual Aviation Day which is usually held in July.

The money is expected to come from the council’s War Memorial budget and funded through underspends from the 2014/15 budget.
