JOHN Carver has outlined his desire to succeed Alan Pardew and take permanent charge of Newcastle United, but reports in France suggest Remi Garde and Christophe Galtier are both in the running for the job.

In Carver’s second game as caretaker manager, the Magpies slumped to a fifth FA Cup third round defeat in seven seasons with a 1-0 loss at Premier League strugglers Leicester City.

Leonardo Ulloa’s 39th minute striker was enough to secure the Foxes’ passage to the next round, while the Magpies were booed off by over 4,000 travelling fans at the final whistle.

However, Carver, who spent 18 months as head coach of Major League Soccer side Toronto FC, revealed he does want the job full time despite failing to lead the Tynesiders to victory.

“I’d be a fool if didn’t want to be head coach of this football club,” Carver said.

“I told the players that the first morning (after Pardew’s departure). Now I’m making it public.”

Newcastle have made it clear they want to appoint a head coach rather than a manager and Carver insists he would have no qualms if the club’s transfer dealings were out of his hands.

He said: “The position is now a head coach’s job. The head coach’s job is to get team ready for the next game.

“When I was at Toronto I never got involved in transfer dealings.”

Reports in France suggest owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley have compiled a shortlist that includes former Lyon head coach Garde and St Etienne’s Galtier, and talks could begin over the next 48 hours.

Closer to home Steve McClaren had been linked with the vacant post, but the Derby County boss has reportedly reassured the Rams hierarchy he is staying put.
