Full-time: Leicester City 1 Newcastle United 0

LEONARDO Ulloa’s first half goal condemned a lacklustre Newcastle United to another FA Cup third round exit at the King Power Stadium.

Ulloa headed in Matty James’ shot six minutes before the break as the Magpies struggled in John Carver’s second game in caretaker charge.

He named side that included seven changes with Jak Alnwick, Paul Dummett, Cheick Tiote and Emmanuel Riviere the only players to keep their places from the 3-3 draw with Burnley.

Davide Santon returned to make his first start since April, while Massadio Haidara, Mike Williamson, Vurnon Anita, Haris Vuckic, Remy Cabella and Adam Armstrong were also handed starts.

Carver also named a youthful bench which included Alex Gilliead and Callum Roberts.

The Magpies’ first shot fell to Riviere in the eighth minute, but the striker was caught off guard when Ritchie De Laet’s header fell to him on the edge of the box with his weak shot comfortably saved by Ben Hamer.

Moments later the hosts created their first chance when Tom Lawrence swung in a corner to Ulloa, but the striker’s snatched shot sailed over.

Lawrence was involved in another chance for the Foxes soon after when Jak Alnwick punched straight to the midfielder, but to the keeper’s relief he sliced his shot wide.

On the half hour mark Ulloa blazed a shot wide, but two minutes later the Magpies thought they were ahead.

Anita broke forward down the right and played a low pass across goal to Armstrong on the edge of the area. The striker sent then sent a neat back heel into the path of Cabella, who finished low past Hamer, but as the Newcastle players broke away to celebrate the linesman flagged for offside.

It was a well-worked move from the visitors, but they failed to build on it and found themselves behind seven minutes later.

Newcastle were caught napping when a short corner was played out to Matty James on the 18 yard line and Ulloa somehow managed to get his head on the shot to deflect it past Alnwick.

Carver’s men started the second half brightly when Armstrong forced a save from Hamer, but Leicester responded when Liam Moore saw his header go wide from a corner.

Leicester should have doubled their lead in the 64th minute when Albrighton crossed in to substitute Chris Wood, but Alnwick got a strong hand to push his diving header around the post.

From the corner, Alnwick was called into action again when he palmed another shot away from goal.

Wes Morgan’s foul on Armstrong handed Newcastle a chance from the edge of the box, but Vuckic’s free-kick was deflected wide.
