CHARITIES and community groups in the Thirsk area will receive a boost after fundraisers teamed up with Santa.

Thirsk Rotary said the Santa Runs it held over several evenings in Thirsk and Sowerby, an appearance by Santa and his elves at a grotto and Santa's arrival at the town's festive lights switch-on event had raised £1,558.

The group, which relaunched the town's fireworks night event at Thirsk Racecourse, in November, said a wide range of groups would benefit from its fundraising activities over the past year.

A rotary spokesman said Herriot Hospice Homecare would receive £1,500, while Thirsk Clock would be given £250 towards its Christmas meal and support for homeless youngsters.

He said Thirsk Community Care Association would receive £250 for the Christmas support they give to the elderly, lonely and those in need in the community.

The Family Life Church and East Thirsk Community Hall would both be given £250 for their Christmas meals and parties for people who are on their own.
