POLICE investigating a spate of thefts in Teesdale have arrested two people stopped in a car that been reported stolen.

The black Audi A4, which was taken from a farm at Butterknowle on Sunday, was spotted near Kirk Merrington by plain clothed officers at about 11pm.

Officers used a 'stinger' device near Chilton when the vehicle failed to stop, which deflated the tyres.

The car was brought to a stop near to the Thinford roundabout on the A167 and a man and a woman, both from Bishop Auckland, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of theft of the car and other offences.

Neighbourhood Inspector Kevin Tuck, of Durham Police, said he wanted to thank the public for their support after message and appeals were sent to more than 700 farm watch members across Teesdale and Weardale.

Criminals have stolen several quad bikes and made attempts on farm buildings since last week with one quad bike that was taken from Woodland on Sunday night being recovered on Monday morning following community information.
