GATESHEAD moved into the second round of the FA Trophy as goals from Danny Wright and Lewis Guy enabled them to see off Evo-Stick Northern Premier League side Halesowen Town.

Halesowen were arguably the better side in a low-key opening half-hour, but Gateshead claimed the lead eight minutes before the interval as Wright headed home a looping cross from full-back Craig Baxter.

Alex Rodman came close to doubling the Heed’s lead in the opening minute of the second half, and a second goal duly arrived on the hour mark.

Rob Ramshaw flicked Rodman’s cross against the post, and Guy reacted quickest to drill the loose ball into the far corner of the net from close range.

Halesowen almost got themselves back into it when Daniel Bragoli fired narrowly over the crossbar, but Gateshead suffered precious few scares as they booked their place in Monday’s second-round draw.

Gateshead: Bartlett, Curtis, Clark, Oster (Rankine 86), Turnbull, Shaw (Ramshaw 56), Guy (Chandler 71), Baxter, O’Donnell, Rodman, Wright.
