Full-time: Gateshead 2 Warrington Town 0

GATESHEAD made it two North-East non-league teams in tomorrow’s FA Cup third-round draw as they battled to a 2-0 win over Warrington Town in today’s second-round tie.

Matty Pattison’s eighth-minute volley and a stoppage-time strike from Danny Wright enabled Gateshead to join Blyth Spartans in the third round, and ensured the Tynesiders would not be another cup scalp for Warrington, who saw off League Two Exeter City at the first-round stage.

Pattison guided home a volley from the edge of the six-yard box after Rob Ramshaw had broken down the right-hand side and pulled the ball back into his path.

Gateshead dominated the first half and should really have added to their lead, only for John Oster to see his goalbound effort blocked by a defender and Pattison to side-foot wide after Alex Rodman had exploited more space down the Warrington left.

The visitors, who play in the same Evo-Stick North league as Darlington, improved in the second half, but were unable to fashion a serious chance that might have led to an equaliser.

Pattison came within inches of doubling Gateshead’s lead when he headed JJ O’Donnell’s left-wing cross against the post, and Danny Wright struck the same upright as he lobbed Warrington goalkeeper Karl Wills with three minutes left.

However, there was no let off for Wills as he erred in stoppage time. The keeper fluffed his attempted clearance as Warrington frantically pushed for an equaliser, and Wright tapped the ball into the empty net.
