Sheffield United are set to allow convicted rapist Ched Evans to train with his former club later this week.

Press Association Sport understands that the club have agreed to allow him to train in order to recover his fitness but there is no move by the Blades to re-sign the striker.

The 25-year-old Welsh international was released from jail last month after serving half of a five-year jail term imposed in April 2012 for raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room in Rhyl, North Wales.

Almost 157,000 people have signed a petition urging Sheffield United not to re-sign Evans and the campaign group Object said on Twitter: "Object stands in solidarity with the woman Ched Evans was convicted of raping and all other rape survivors affected by today's news."

But others, including the Professional Footballers' Association, believe he should be allowed to play again.

Moyes: David Moyes will take charge of his first training session with Real Sociedad today before being officially presented as the Spanish side's new coach, the club have announced.

Moyes was named as the next Sociedad boss late on Monday night - seven months after he was sacked as Manchester United manager.

The Scot, who was axed by United in April following a dismal first season in charge at Old Trafford, has been handed a one-and-a-half-year deal with the Primera Division outfit and is due to land in Spain later on Tuesday.

A Sociedad statement read: "The new Real Sociedad coach David Moyes will arrive in San Sebastian mid-afternoon, as such it will be the coaches of Sanse (Sociedad's B team) Asier Santana and Imanol Alguacil who will be in charge of the first team for this afternoon's training session.

"David Moyes will take training tomorrow and then will be officially presented. Full details will be announced later in the day."

Naughton: Tottenham's Kyle Naughton has lost his appeal against his red card against Stoke, the Football Association has announced.

The full-back will serve an immediate two-match ban after the appeal was dismissed by an independent regulatory commission hearing yesterday.

Ireland: James McCarthy continued to be assessed yesterday after reporting for international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

The Everton midfielder complained of a tight hamstring following his club's 1-1 Barclays Premier League draw at Sunderland on Sunday.

Glasgow-born McCarthy is manager Martin O'Neill's biggest doubt ahead of Friday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland at Celtic Park.

He and full-back Stephen Ward headed for the gym as their team-mates warmed up at Gannon Park in Malahide with midfielder Glenn Whelan among them just weeks after fracturing a bone in his leg during last month's draw in Germany.
