THE FA Cup second-round draw has set up an intriguing North-East derby with Hartlepool United due to host Northern Premier League side Blyth Spartans.

Blyth’s reward for Sunday’s superb 4-1 win over Altrincham is a trip to Victoria Park to take on a Hartlepool side that saw off non-league East Thurrock in the first round on Saturday.

Blyth boast a strong FA Cup pedigree, having reached the fifth round of the competition in 1978, and six years ago they saw off Bournemouth at the second-round stage before falling to Blackburn Rovers in round three.

The Northumberland club compete in the seventh tier of the English game – three rungs below Hartlepool – and will hope to produce another upset when they travel to Victoria Park at the start of next month.

The Blyth squad contains two former Pools players – centre-half Nathan Buddle and midfielder Stephen Turnbull, while goalkeeper Peter Jeffries is from the town – and their boss, Tom Wade, said: "It's the fifth away game in six in the Cup. It's a good game. I know [manager] Paul Murray and a couple of lads that play for them.

"They have a young side like us. It's a good tie and local for us. It's going to be a great game. We'll have a lot of supporters there."

Pools avoided the possibility of an upset at the weekend, and will be hoping to emulate their last FA Cup tie against Blyth, which ended in a 5-1 win at the Victoria Ground in 1961.

This will be the seventh FA Cup meeting between the two sides, with the most memorable previous tie coming in November 1925 and seeing three drawn matches before Blyth claimed a 2-1 win.

The game is due to take place on Saturday, December 6, although there is a strong chance that it will be selected for live television coverage.

Gateshead are the other North-East team in the second round, and they will host first-round giant killers Warrington Town, who are the lowest-ranked side left in the competition.

Warrington, who had never previously reached the first-round proper, beat Exeter City on Friday evening despite competing in the Evo-Stick First Division North.

Managed by Shaun Reid, the brother of former Sunderland boss, Peter, they courted controversy earlier in the season when they refused to complete a league game with Darlington at Heritage Park.

Warrington were fined £1,500 and Darlington were awarded three points after Reid refused to continue the game following a 30th-minute injury to referee Danny Markham.

Reid said of their Cup draw: "Gateshead are doing very well in the Conference. It will be a difficult tie but it's the FA Cup and it's 11 v 11. We won't go there with fear. The FA Cup seems to bring the best out of my players.

"I've got plenty of people in football who can help us scout - I'll call in a few favours. They'll find it more difficult to find out about us - I change my team a lot."

York City will have to beat AFC Wimbledon in a replay to make the second-round, and they will travel to Wycombe Wanderers if they are successful in next week’s return game in South London.
