AN error from former Hartlepool United goalkeeper Jan Budtz helped Gateshead on their way to earn a comfortable 4-0 victory over Gainsborough Trinity in the FA Cup.

The Danish shot-stopper, who spent two years at Pools after signing in 2007, was beaten from 45 yards moments before half-time which proved costly.

There was very little between the two sides in the first half until a speculative effort from Tom Allan took the keeper by surprise and crept in at the far post with just one minute remaining of the first half.

It was that goal which proved decisive and helped Gateshead in to the FA Cup first round because the Tyneside club then went on to claim an easy win.

Danny Wright doubled the lead just after the hour when he nodded in a cross from substitute Carl Finnigan and Alex Rodman added the third by burying his shot in the bottom corner.

At that point Trinity’s heads started to go down and Gateshead added the fourth late in the game when John Oster picked out Jon Shaw and he made the most of the space he was afforded to beat Budtz.

Gateshead: Bartlett, Wilson, Curtis, Oster, Turnbull, Guy (Finnigan 57), Ramshaw (Pattison 69), Allan, Baxter, Rodman, Wright (Shaw 70).

YORK CITY did just enough to remain outside of the League Two relegation zone – despite letting the lead slip at home to Mansfield.

Diego de Girolamo had put the Minstermen ahead in the 20th minute when he smartly turned inside the area to convert Russell Penn’s delivery.

But York, a point clear of Tranmere and Hartlepool below them, could not hold on to their advantage and conceded when Mansfield debutant Daniel Carr volleyed in Vadaine Oliver’s header to level.

York could have reclaimed their lead, but had to settle for a point and new boss Russ Wilcox is confident that progress will continue.

Wilcox said: “I’ve only been in the building nine days. The positive is that we’re unbeaten in two because that’s what you look at. There are always things to learn from to move us forward.

“This was a game of two halves. We passed the ball and moved the ball well, we created some good opportunities and scored a fantastic goal. We asked lads to be brave in the second half against a team that are very effective at what they do but we couldn’t keep hold of the ball.”

York: Cisak, McCoy, McCombe, Lowe, Ilesanmi, Coulson, Montrose (Platt 72), Penn, Meikle (Straker 75), De Girolamo, Brunt.
