AN online resource for family and railway historians has gone live thanks to the hard work of volunteers.

For more than eight years volunteers working at the Head of Steam - Darlington Railway Museum have worked to compile a catalogue of information about staff employed by the North Eastern Railway, using its Pension Society records.

The pension society was founded in 1907 with each worker who jointed presented with an index card that included a number of details about them, including their date of birth, job title, where they worked and the dates of their retirement and death.

The resource is available to all members of the public to use to further their own research.

Leona White-Hannant, the museum curator, said: “The museum would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who worked on the project and especially to Stacey Hodgson who catalogued the last batch of records. Without their hard work and dedication this would never have been possible.

"The online catalogue not only makes the information we hold available to a wider audience but it will also help to preserve the records for generations to come”.

The catalogues are available darlington.gov.uk/kenhoole
