A POPULAR motorsport event has celebrated its centenary year by raising more than £4,000 for local charities.

Richmond Motor Club, organisers of the Scott Trial based in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale in North Yorkshire on Saturday, hoped to raise around £10,000 for its charities, which include the Great North Air Ambulance, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team.

Two local businesses also combined their efforts in an attempt to raise a minimum of £2,000, with Shildon-based Barrier Energy and Darlington-based Northern Distribution Ltd pledging £1,000 towards the charities.

Kevin and Barry Johnson from Barrier Energy, and Trevor Willans from Northern Distribution Ltd, put together a team of veteran trials riders to complete a non-competitive relay ride.

The team was assembled with the help of long time Scott enthusiast Nigel Mackenzie, and consisted of five riders, all of whom were multiple award winners in the event during the 1970s and 1980s.

Between them the team collected 16 silver and three gold awards.

Mr Willans said: "We are delighted to report that the team of veterans completed the trial successfully in just over seven hours, and to date have managed to raise more than £4,000 for the Scott charities."

The team is now hoping to hit a target of £5,000 and is people to visit the team's Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/centenaryscotttrialcharityteam203.
