YORKSHIRE is about to take on the Scottish at their own game – by going into the whisky business.

The spirit will be produced in Yorkshire for the first time, when a new brewery diversifies early next year.

BAD Co opened as a brewery in June and won the top prize at last month's York Beer and Cider Festival for its pale ale, Comfortably Numb.

Owner Paul Holden-Ridgway says the firm will add a distillery in early 2015, to produce whisky, gin, vodka and rum.

However the whisky will not be available to taste for at least three years, to comply with the Scotch Whisky Association's ageing rules.

The company is based in a large warehouse near Dishforth Airfield, and its BAD name stands for Brewing and Distilling.

Mr Holden-Ridgway said he had not yet committed to one particular style, but said: "I really like the Speyside malts so might go for something like those."
