ONE of North Yorkshire’s best-known churchmen is to retire.

Keith Punshon, 66, the longest serving residentiary canon at Ripon Cathedral, is stepping down after 18 years in the role.

In paying tribute the Dean of Ripon, the Very Reverend John Dobson, said Canon Punshon had seen the cathedral through many changes, happy times and difficulties.

“He will be remembered for many positive contributions to this community’s life, including developments at Thorpe Prebend House, the cathedral’s stunning glass doors, and liaison with military communities across the region,” he said.

He added that Canon Punshon’s crowning achievement was as sub-dean in the vacancy following the death of Dean Keith Jukes after a short illness last year.

“He managed to provide clear leadership that helped the cathedral to come together in very difficult and tragic circumstances,” he said.
