WORK to renovate a near derelict building on Darlington’s High Northgate has been started by a developer, who hopes to bring the site’s retail and residential uses back to life.
The former retail outlet, which stands on the corner of Leadenhall Street, opposite The Navy Club, has been partially demolished at the rear and needs a complete overhaul to make it habitable and safe for use.
A planning application has been submitted to Darlington Borough Council asking for retrospective permission for the partial demolition and for planning permission to build a two storey extension in its place to offer two retail units and two first floor flats.
In a statement to planning officials, an agent working on behalf of the developer notes that the building is derelict and has stood vacant for some time.
The statement notes that any work done to the building will match existing brickwork and the pitched slate roof, in keeping with its position in the Northgate Conservation Area.
A decision on the application will be made in the coming weeks.
