YORKSHIRE eventer Holly Woodhead enjoyed the biggest success of her career as she claimed two medals at the Young Rider European Eventing Championships in Portugal.

The 20-year-old, who is from York, secured a silver medal in the individual three-day event competition, and was part of the British squad that finished third to win bronze in the team event.

Riding DHI Lupison, her own ten-year-old gelding, Woodhead was down in 18th in the individual competition after last Thursday’s dressage phase ended with her on 48-.70 points.

However, a fantastic clear round in the cross-country lifted her up into the silver medal spot going into the final day of competition.

She headed into her show-jumping test knowing that a single rail down would force her off the podium, but a polished display of jumping from DHI Lupison meant she finished with a silver medal.

It was very nearly a gold, as Germany’s Charlotte Hackmeister had two fences in hand going into the show-jumping, and needed them both as he won the title by two points.

RICHARD KILTY signed off his athletics season in style as he was part of the British 4x100m relay squad that helped Europe claim victory in the IAAF Continental Cup in Morocco.

Britain’s relay success at the recent European Championships earned them the right to compete for the Europe in the season-ending competition which pits continents against each other over two days of competition.

The British relay team finished second behind the Americas in a time of 38.62secs, but Europe were crowned champions after winning ten of the 20 events.

Tiffany Porter was the stand-out British performer of the weekend as she set a new British record in the 100m hurdles.

YORKSHIRE duo Ben Swift and Lizzie Armitstead are part of the British squad that will compete in cycling’s Road World Championships in Spain this weekend.

Swift, who narrowly missed out on a place at this year’s Tour de France, is part of a strong British contingent for Sunday’s men’s race that also features former Tour winner Chris Froome.

Armitstead, who is from Otley and claimed a silver medal in the Olympic road race, leads a six-rider women’s squad on Saturday that also includes two-time junior world champion Lucy Garner.

Technical director Shane Sutton said: “Lizzie Armitstead has a great team around her including two mountain bikers who should be able to support her on the reasonably hilly course.”
