A MOTORCYCLIST has died after crashing his bike on the road passing between the highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales.

The rider, a 48-year-old man from York, suffered fatal injuries on the B6479 between Ribblehead and Horton in Ribblesdale, at around 5.35pm yesterday, when he and a fellow rider came off their bikes on a left hand bend.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other rider, also aged 48 and from York, sustained serious injuries in the incident and was taken to Airedale Hospital, near Keighley, West Yorkshire, for treatment.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The road, which is overlooked by Whernside and Pen-Y-Ghent, was closed for six hours to allow police to examine the scene.

Officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the two motorcycles – a black KTM and a red and white Husqvarna – travelling along the B6479 prior to the collision to call 101.
