A CUTE puppy found cold and abandoned in a hedge has had one of its badly injured legs amputated.

A new home is being sought for the male Cocker Spaniel, nicknamed Bungle, which has been nursed around the clock since it was discovered on Friday.

Cold, lethargic and covered in oil and dirt, the struggling stray was spotted in The Larun Beat in Yarm, Stockton, at about 8.45am.

Animal Welfare officers at Stockton Borough Council’s were informed who took the dog to a vet.

X-rays revealed a dislocation in its front right leg, which could have happened up to four weeks ago.

A spokesman said an operation to save the leg was performed today (Thursday) but the surgeon was left with no option but to amputate the limb.

The Dogs Trust charity has agreed to fund the treatment and find the poorly pooch a new home.

They are appealing for information about who owned the dog and whether it had been deliberately harmed.

It has been named Bungle by staff, as it looks similar to the brown, furry bear that would get up to mischief with Zippy and George in the iconic children’s television show, Rainbow.

Councillor Steve Nelson, Stockton Council's cabinet member for housing and community safety, said: “The puppy is being well cared for now but we are very keen to find out who owned the dog or saw anything suspicious prior to the dog being found.

“We need to investigate whether any offences have been committed because the vet believes it may have suffered the dislocated leg three to four weeks ago and should have received appropriate veterinary attention at that time.

Anyone who is unable to look after a pet is urged to seek advice or help at an early stage from their council’s animal welfare service, or another animal organisation.

“We are keen to establish how and when the injury happened and are appealing for anyone who may have information to get in touch with us in confidence,” Cllr Nelson added.

“Our animal welfare staff have nursed the dog round the clock since Friday and our close working partnership with Dogs Trust, who have been absolutely brilliant with their assistance, will ensure the long term welfare of the dog.”
