A SMALL fluttering show of support for the Union will be raised in Yarm as Scots go to the polls to vote in the independence referendum.

Yarm councillor Mark Chatburn says he feel great empathy with the Yes campaigners but hopes that the No campaigners will win the day and prevent the Union being torn apart.

As he prepared to hoist the flag in the market town, he said: "This doesn't just affect people living in Scotland it affects everybody living in the United Kingdom but we are not getting the chance to vote.

"Living in the North East, people can have a lot of sympathy with them, especially when they talk about the influence of a London-based parliament. The people of the North East or more akin to the Scots than they are to the people in, say, the South East.

"However, I don't think that is reason enough to break up one of the most successful unions in the world and this is our way of showing support to the United Kingdom."
