HISTORY enthusiasts are being given the chance to delve into some of the diaries and journals held at the North Yorkshire County Record Office in Northallerton.

The course, called Dear Diary – with a Yorkshire Accent, will give an insight into how people lived in the past, and include excepts from a holiday in Goathland; a young girl enjoying the attractions of Ripon after leaving school; and a young teacher setting up a school.

Another course being offered by the record office, Delving into the Archives, is for those who have already done some work in censuses and parish registers.

Students will be introduced to some of the less well known historical sources, as well as court records, church records other than parish registers, tax lists and rent rolls.

The courses cost £55 each and run for eight weeks on Fridays at the Friends’ Meeting House, Grove Square, Leyburn, commencing on Friday, October 3. Delving into Archives runs from 11am to 1pm and Dear Diary from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.
