SUNDERLAND (4-1-4-1):

Mannone: Should have done better with Adebayor’s shot, but made excellent early saves to deny the striker and Chadli 6

Vergini: Was nowhere near Chadli as the deadlock was broken, or when the midfielder crossed for Spurs’ second 5

Brown: Quickly improved after a flustered start, and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time as van Aanholt’s clearance hit him 6

O’Shea: Marshalled his defence well throughout, and while he was forced to sit deep, Spurs rarely got players behind him 6

Van Aanholt: His attacking runs on the overlap were restricted, and his weak attempted clearance set up Eriksen’s goal 5

Cattermole: His defensive presence prevented Sunderland from being completely overrun, with a crucial tackle on Lamela being especially well timed 6

Johnson: Scored an excellent early solo goal, but was nowhere near as effective after he was switched back to the right 6

Larsson: Produced his poorest display of the season, with his lack of mobility repeatedly exposed by Lamela and Eriksen 4

Rodwell: Another nondescript performance from a player who is still to live up his billing – not influential enough in either defence or attack 4

Alvarez: It was always going to be difficult to make his Premier League debut in such a high-tempo game, and he looked uncomfortable for long spells 4

WICKHAM: More than justified his inclusion ahead of Fletcher as he held up the ball well and caused problems with his direct running 8

Subs: Giaccherini (for Larsson, 65): Helped change the game when he came on midway through the second half, with his movement asking questions of the Spurs defence 7

Buckley (for Alvarez, 65): Added some momentum to Sunderland’s attacking, but wasted a glorious chance of a winner when he side-footed over 6

Gomez (for Rodwell, 79)

(not used): Pantilimon (gk), Jones, Bridcutt, Altidore.

TOTTENHAM (4-2-3-1): Lloris 6; Dier 7, Kaboul 6, Chiriches 5, Rose 8; DEMBELE 9, Capoue 6; Lamela 8, Eriksen 8 (Lennon 86), Chadli 7 (Stambouli 70, 5); Adebayor 7 (Kane 79).

Subs (not used): Vorm (gk), Naughton, Fazio, Townsend.

Man Of The Match: MOUSSA DEMBELE – The Belgian controlled things from the base of midfield, breaking up Sunderland’s play, sparking Spurs attacks and almost scoring with a fierce drive that struck the post.
