SCOTTISH rock band Simple Minds kick-started a two-day music festival last night (Friday, September 12), as pop legends The Jacksons touched down in the UK to complete a star-studded line-up.

Hundreds of music fans of all ages descended on Sedgefield in County Durham for the opening night of the Hardwick Live Garden Party.

Anticipation for the festival has been building for months and last night’s performances did not disappoint, with pop rockers Scouting for Girls and headliners Simple Minds delivering electrifying sets.

The festival continues in the picturesque grounds of Hardwick Hall Hotel today (Saturday) when pop royalty The Jacksons,take to the stage.

Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, Adam Ant and a host of up-and-coming North-East musicians complete the line-up.

In June, Tito Jackson told The Northern Echo he was looking forward to performing in the region.

"I love Britain," he said. "I come over about four times a year. The people are so warm and friendly. We will perform all the big hits.The crowd can expect an energetic performance."

Laura Jenkin, 33, from Durham City, attended the festival with a group of work colleagues.

"I have had a great night so far, the atmosphere is amazing and we have been really lucky with the weather," she said. "I am coming back tomorrow and am so excited as I have always loved the Jacksons and Michael Jackson. I can't wait to have a good dance."

Tickets are still available on the door and cost £55 for adults, £15 for 13 to 16-year-olds and £8 for three to 12-year-olds.

Doors open at noon.
