STOCKTON sprinter Richard Kilty signed off for the season in style as he claimed the 150m title at the Great North City Games on the Newcastle-Gateshead quayside.

Kilty, who was crowned World Indoor champion in the 100m in March and also won outdoor relay medals at both the Commonwealth Games and European Championships this summer, triumphed by one hundredth of a second in a thrilling finish in front of the Baltic Art Gallery.

Kilty edged out American Michael Rodgers, with another British runner, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, finishing in third position.

The Teessider will now head into the winter with the European Indoor Championships likely to be an early part of his schedule next season.

Morpeth Harrier Laura Weightman could only finish sixth in a top-class women’s mile that was won by Scotland’s Laura Muir.

Weightman, who won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games and bronze at the European Championships in what has proved to be a breakthrough season, finished in 4:37.13 as Muir’s power in the final 40m carried her to victory.

Ireland’s Ciara Mageean finished second, with Hannah England out-finishing Kenyan Hellen Obiri to claim third.

Middlesbrough’s Chris Tomlinson finished third in the men’s long jump, with his best effort of 7.73m coming from his final jump.

Olympic champion Greg Rutherford claimed victory with 7.92m, with another Briton, JJ Jegede, finishing in the runner-up spot.

The afternoon started with Britain’s Asha Philip claiming victory in the women’s 150m as she finished ahead of Jodie Williams and Allyson Felix.

Christine Ohuruogu triumphed in the rarely-run 500m, breaking clear with around 100m left and holding off Scottish 800m specialist Lynsey Sharp to win in 1:07.46.

The men’s mile went to Germany’s Homiyu Tesfaye, who finished a couple of tenths of a second ahead of Kenya’s Asbel Kiprop.

Shildon Harrier Cameron Boyek finished tenth as he stepped up to senior competition from the junior ranks.
