TWO children who completed a summer reading challenge along with hundreds of others have collected their prizes.

Five-year-olds Miles Baird and Grace McDermott received their prizes at Crown Street Library for winning Darlington Libraries’ Great Summer Reading Challenge.

The challenge is run every year to support children’s literacy skills during the summer break, with the aim to keep children reading regularly and not letting their ability slip while out of school.

Children were asked to visit any one of the three Darlington libraries on three separate occasions to borrow books during the summer holiday, each time gaining rewards including stickers and vouchers for the Dolphin Centre.

Darlington Libraries Bookstart and library literacy co-ordinator Suzy Youldon said: "Watching young children visit the library in awe of the huge range of books on offer to them is mesmerising. The greatest reward for each child is actually reading the books and enjoying the stories, some of which will stay with them a lifetime”

The two book-loving youngsters were picked at random from the 400 who completed the challenge and each received a bike, courtesy of Bikestop, bike accessories donated by Halfords and tickets provided by Darlington Civic Theatre to see this year’s pantomime,The Chuckles of Oz.
