A WOMAN has been named community champion for her dedication to helping young people in North Yorkshire.

Abigail Homer, chief executive of the charity The Clock, in Thirsk, was selected for the title in a contest by Grand Central Rail designed to find people who have made a real difference to the communities that lie along the rail company’s train routes.

The Clock was set up to ensure the social inclusion of young people in Thirsk and across North Yorkshire. It provides social activities and support service to young people and gives them a safe place to meet and develop skills.

When it was set up in Thirsk more than ten years ago, it was envisaged about 15 young people would need support at any one time. But those numbers have increased over the years and presently more than 80 young people are being supported by staff.

It also now offers services across North Yorkshire.

Sean English, general manager at Grand Central, said: “There are so many people that, very often completely under the radar, are making a real difference to people’s lives and our Heart of the Community Awards aim to give them the recognition they deserve.

“I would like to congratulate Abigail for her commitment and passion for her local community and we look forward to celebrating with all the regional winners at our award ceremony in September.”

Abigail will now be invited to attend an award ceremony in September with other regional winners and will be presented with a pair of return train tickets to London.

One overall winner along the North-East route will also be selected at the awards ceremony to receive an overnight trip for four to London and a £500 donation from Grand Central to the charity of their choice.
