A COUNCIL has insisted there will be no disruption to a nostalgic flypast event expected to attract thousands of people, despite closing one of the main routes to the airport for resurfacing works.

The closure of a one mile section of the A67 – a key route to Durham Tees Valley Airport (DTVA) from Darlington and the A1(M) – days before the much-anticipated arrival of the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster flight has led to fears of traffic delays for visitors to the sold out event.

Passes for up to 800 vehicles have been sold for celebration event on Thursday, August 28, with many people expected to travel from outside the region for a chance to see one of the last two remaining Lancaster bombers still flying.

The A67 was closed today (Tuesday, August 26) by Darlington Borough Council for a two week resurfacing programme between the A66 Morton Palms roundabout and the Sadberge Road roundabout outside Middleton St George.

The road is not expected to reopen until Friday, September 5.

A 4.5mile diversion is in place along the A66 and through the village of Sadberge, before connecting with the A67 via Sadberge Road.

The decision to close the road for such a lengthy period, and while a major event was scheduled, was questioned by a number of people on the council’s own Facebook page, with some asking why the road closures could not be confined to one lane or done at night.

A spokeswoman for Darlington Borough Council said: “We are aware of the event and are assisting the organisers.

“Diversions will be in place to access the airport and we do not expect any major delays.”

Peter Dodson, a spokesman for DTVA, confirmed that the event organisers had been contacted by the council about the road closure and said officials were working to put up clear diversion signs for those travelling to the airport.

Councillor Brian Jones, ward member for Sadberge, said the diversion through the village was “not ideal” but acknowledged there were limited options available to the council.

He added: “There’s no two ways about it, this will cause a lot of additional traffic to come through Sadberge and there will be problems and delays caused by it."

And how would missing this event possibly help any one of these? You seem to have lost the plot.

Only Darlington Council could make a total c**k-up like this. They are worse than useless. They are a bl**dy menace to the whole town. Either they are just totally thick, or they are just mean and nasty. You decide. The sooner we get rid of them the better. Maybe we should arm the Lanc with a Tallboy and have them deliver it in time honoured style right into the middle of the cabinet office and while they are all actually there.

I'm hoping that the roads aren't too blocked with people trying to get in on the off chance. If you don't have your ticket, then don't come and block the roads. Especially now that Dumb and Dumber have dug the roads up.

Is this one of the councils underhanded schemes to undermine the airport, so that they can close it for housing development?

It says "Major airport route", ie a major route to the airport rather than a major airport.

Cones are being put out on the roads now - so unless you're one of the 800 with passes then it's going to be very difficult to park anywhere near!

What about the disruption for locals with the 2 week road closure, having had no notice by the council of the total road closure, again why not close one side of the road at a time which is what any other council would have done. Darlington council & planing are world champions at bad decision making with terrible road layouts

Leave the car at home and catch the bus; it does not go to the terminal. It has to turn around near the hotel on the original road in to the airport before they built the road that will enable them to build houses! The tickets were £10 per car with a maximum of 4 passengers & the number of tickets were limited by car parking space; nothing was said about individuals on the bus.

There were no insults. You have simply brought in a lot of unrelated arguments into the thread for no apparent reason. Your comments have nothing to do with the issues being discussed. You need to find another forum to air your views on these major issues.

Car parking was the issue, so buses, trains and pedestrians may still be able to gain access. Maybe we'll see some details on this by tomorrow. Lots of people would like to see this and it would be nice to see full details, so check out the DTVA site.

I just have visions of tailbacks of cars with no airfield passes jamming up the overcrowded roads and holding up the legitimate traffic from getting into their allocated spaces. There may also be major hold ups for passengers too, so please. if you don't already have a pass, don't try and force your way in. It will be a waste of petrol for all concerned. Take a train or bus.

I was lucky enough to get a pass and took my parents to this extremely moving event.
Living in Hurworth, i came through MSG anyway, but did not see any holds ups or significant congestion going in or out.

The event marked the huge contribution and loss made by the Canadians flying out of what was RAF Goosepool. The spontanious round of applause from the crown as the Lancaster landed truly sent a shiver down the spine.
Huge thanks to all those who made this event happen and most of all to all the aircrew of all nationalities without whom you would not have the freedom to trade insults on sites such as this......
