MIDDLESBROUGH Union Jack’s has been named best takeaway and Stockton-based Borges the best restaurant at

the World Parmo Championships 2014

The contest was one of the highlights at Stockton’s annual Summer Show which is taking place this bank holiday weekend at Preston Park.

The grounds of shipping magnate, Sir Robert Ropner’s former home welcomed thousands of visitors on Sunday with many more expected on Bank Holiday Monday.

The packed programme of entertainment includes medieval jousting displays with the ‘Devil’s Horsemen’, birds of prey displays, World Parmo Championship, a food festival celebrating the very best of the region’s food and produce, music from brass bands and a trombone choir as well as a range of craft and gift stalls.

The annual world parmo competition took place on Sunday with a cook-off to determine the best restaurant and best take-away.

Borge and The George, both in Stockton town centre and Central Park in Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, competed for the best restaurant title.

While the takeaway parmesan contenders vying to cook the best deep-fried breadcrumbed chicken or pork escalope smothered in creamy bechamel sauce and topped with cheese were Union Jack’s, Avtars Golden Fry, and G’s Golden Chippy, all of Middlesbrough.

Revellers then enjoyed a picnic in the park before a family-friendly concert by local band, The Wildcats of Kilkenny, staged an Irish knees-up with a Teesside twist.

On Monday, dog owners can bring their pets to a dog show with a range of classes such as waggiest tail and most handsome dog.

Entry to the Stockton Summer Show costs £5 for adults and £2.50 for under 16s with free entry for under fives and wheelchair users. Gates open at 11am and parking is free.
