CONTROVERSIAL comedian Chubby Brown has landed himself in hot water again – after being spotted reading a newspaper at the wheel of his luxury car.

The colourful comic was caught on camera while perusing The Sun at the same time as he drove along the A19 in North Yorkshire.

And the 69-year-old has now been fined by magistrates in Northallerton after pleading guilty by post to driving without due care and attention.

The comedian - real name Royston Vasey - was spotted driving along the A19’s southbound carriageway near Crathorne on May 15.

His image was captured by one of the police’s mobile camera operators and the resulting video clearly shows him with the newspaper spread in front of the steering wheel of his Lexus.

He was fined £30 and received four points on his licence. He was also ordered to pay costs of £40 and a victim surcharge of £20. The comedian did not attend the court on Wednesday.

Afterwards North Yorkshire Police’s mobile safety camera manager Dave Brown said: “This is another case where our mobile safety cameras have proved that they are not just about speed, demonstrating that we have the technology to capture all manner of offences which put road users at risk.

“Motorists must give the road their full attention as a few seconds’ lapse in concentration can have catastrophic consequences, literally meaning the difference between life and death.”

Today (August 21) the motor-mouth comedian was keeping tight-lipped about the offence. His Manchester-based agent insisted he would not be making any comment.

Grangetown-born Brown is famous for his foul-mouthed humour and outlandish stage garb, complete with flying helmet and goggles.

He first found fame on the regional club circuit but now has a national fan base.

He has frequently courted controversy with his act which often mocks various individuals and groups and has released a number of records and videos.

He has also appeared in films and his real name, Royston Vasey, was used as the name of the fictional team in the cult TV comedy series The League of Gentlemen in which he also made some cameo appearances.
