A TEAM of dedicated airmen battled against the elements to raise cash for a local hospice.

Eight personnel from RAF Leeming travelled to the Lake District to take part in the gruelling Total Warrior challenge.

They raised more than £500 for Zoë’s Place baby hospice in Normanby, Middleborough, after coming third out of the 111 teams that took part.

The Total Warrior challenge is a test of strength, stamina, mental determination and teamwork with participant’s battling around a ten-mile course facing more than 35 punishing obstacles on their way. The Leeming team completed the circuit in just two hours and five minutes.

Corporal James Jordan said: “It’s a long course, and the weather played a major part in making it a difficult challenge.

“It was a new experience for most of us and we didn’t really know what to expect, but we trained regularly to prepare for the event.

“After crossing the finishing line, the adrenaline was pumping as we took on Kendal mint cake, protein bars and, of course, the victory beer.”

Zoë’s Place provides palliative, respite and end-of-life care to babies and infants up to five-years-old suffering from life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. It relies heavily on the generosity of the public.

Cpl Jordan added: “This particular charity is close to hearts of several who participated as they are from the area and have seen the results of this well worthy cause.”
