PEOPLE visiting a Middlesbrough art gallery were treated to dance performance with a twist.

Erhebung, which combines traditional Indian dance moves and abstract sculpture, was performed in mima as part of the Billingham International Folklore Festival of World Dance.

Mayuri Boonham, of ATMA Dance who created the show, said the show was specifically created as a contemporary dance-art work installation.

Speaking about performing at the festival, she said: “It's always exciting to see work by other artists at festivals, and at Billingham International Folklore Festival we're looking forward to getting a chance to see many dance styles from across the globe that we've probably not seen before or know anything about.”

The festival’s artistic director Olga Maloney said: “We are over the moon with the response and level of interest the Festival has received from the public, audiences and partner organisations. It has been wonderful the way traditional and contemporary dance has worked side-by-side.

“In the instance of ATMA Dance we managed to bring a unique collaborative project to art gallery audiences at mima who wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to witness this calibre of work.”
