LAST season's Capital One Cup finalists Sunderland will travel to Championship side Birmingham City in the second round of this year's competition after the draw was made tonight.

Gus Poyet's Black Cats were beaten 3-1 by Manchester City at Wembley in March, and will get their journey in this season's competition underway against Lee Clark's side, who overcame League Two outfit Cambirdge United 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Newcastle United have also been handed an away draw and will travel to the Priestield Stadium to take on League One's Gillingham, who beat Yeovil Town 2-1 in the first round.

And after seeing off Oldham Athletic in convincing fashion, Middlesbrough have been rewarded with a home tie against Preston North End, also of League One.

Ties will be played the midweek commencing August 25.
