A PREGNANT woman was airlifted to hospital yesterday morning (Saturday, August 9) following a head-on car crash.

The 22-year-old woman, who was six-months pregnant, was driving a Vauxhall Tigra, which collided with a Toyota Corolla near the Raby Hunt Inn in Summerhouses, near Gainford, County Durham.

Police, paramedics and the Great North Air Ambulance Service were called to the scene of the crash at about 10.30am.

The woman, who is from the local area, was initially thought to be seriously injured, but her injuries were later confirmed as minor.

She was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital Middlesbrough, where she was kept in overnight for observation as a precaution.

The male driver of the Toyota Corolla was not injured.
