The GEORGIAN Theatre Royal in Richmond is expanding its successful Youth Theatre and introducing new classes at Colburn Leisure Centre.

Starting in September, the sessions will be held on Saturday mornings during term time and are open to seven to 18-year-olds who will receive tuition in all areas of theatre and stagecraft, including directing, acting, back-stage work and technical theatre.

Participants will also have the opportunity to perform on the stage of the Georgian Theatre Royal, and take part in productions ranging from classical drama to comedy and musicals.

More than 180 youngsters are currently taught at Richmond and Leyburn, and now - with the help of a grant from Richmondshire District Council’s Communities Opportunity Fund - the theatre is able to extend this provision to cover the areas of Colburn and Catterick Garrison.

The theatre’s chief executive Warnock Kerr said: “Our Youth Theatre is a thriving and vibrant community of young people who are interested in performing arts.

"It is extremely rewarding to see them develop skills and confidence throughout their time with us and many go on to study all aspects of theatre at drama schools or universities.

"Indeed, our two tutors at Colburn were both members of the Youth Theatre who took drama and performing arts-related degrees that have enabled them to provide tuition in this area.

“The expansion in Colburn will help the children of Colburn and Catterick Garrison to learn valuable skills, to have fun and to make new friends."

Cost per session is £4.50 as an introductory offer for new Colburn starters. Pre-enrolment is essential and places are available on a first-come-first-served basis.
