TWO police officers were taken to hospital in the early hours of this morning after being injured trying to stop a car wanted in connection with a theft.

The incident took place on Albert Road in Middlesbrough at 4.45am.

Cleveland Police said a black Saab car was stopped by the two officers after its details had been circulated as wanted over a theft.

One of the officers was speaking to the driver and attempted to take the car keys. The car then drove off, dragging the officer for a short distance along the road.

The other officer was also in collision with the car as it escaped.

Both officers were taken to hospital - one officer was treated for head and neck injuries and the other was treated for minor injuries. Both have since been discharged.

The car was found abandoned a short distance away on Marton Road.

A 32-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and a 24-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and obstructing police.
