AN amateur runner is tackling a marathon challenge as he bids to raise money for a charity which helps children with cancer.

Mike King will attempt to run 192 miles from coast to coast in five days challenge that is traditionally completed in two weeks on foot.

Starting at St Bees on the west coast of Cumbria on Saturday and finishing on the east coast at Robin Hoods Bay, the 39-year-old will run alone on his journey, which from shore to shore ascends the equivalent height of Mount Everest.

Mr King, who lives in Gainford and works for Broadacres Housing Association as a debt enforcement officer, is running in aid of Children with Cancer.

He explained: “My friend’s son Jack Buse was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was just five-years-old and even though he has thankfully been in remission for 13 months now, I know it has had a devastating effect on him and his family.

“The Children with Cancer charity have been amazing in supporting Jack in his battle with cancer, whilst also supporting his parents.

“I have run in two London marathons and held other events to raise money for Children with Cancer but this is by far my biggest one yet.

“It will be a very tough challenge, mentally and physically, but nowhere near as difficult as the children who are battling cancer every day in the UK.”

The father-of-two has already raised nearly £1,000.

He will be supported along the route, including when he passes close to Broadacres’ head office in Northallerton. Several staff have pledged to run a few miles with him.
