SHOPPERS can cycle their way to their five-a-day at a healthy living event tomorrow (Thursday, July 24).

A smoothie-making bike, offering people a free fresh fruit drink, will be one of a number of attractions at the Big Summer event in Darlington market square.

Launched by Darlington Borough Council’s Local Motion team, the Big Summer campaign aims to get more people walking and cycling during the summer.

Walking and cycling maps will also be on offer, as well as a creative competition for youngsters.

Councillor David Lyonette, the council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “The summer is the perfect time to really enjoy all that the great outdoors has to offer.

"Choosing to cycle or walk to a planned activity can really bring a breath of fresh air to your day and removes the worry of sitting in long traffic jams watching a beautiful summer’s day pass you by.

“Hopefully the campaign will show people how much fun the alternatives can be.”
