COUNCILLORS have thrown out plans to build 44 homes on farmland on the outskirts of a village.

Durham County Council’s central and east planning committee today (Tuesday, July 22) rejected proposals to build on land south-east of Brackenhill Avenue, Shotton Colliery, by six votes to two.

Local councillor Eunice Huntington spoke against the scheme, claiming the developer originally wanted to build just five homes but council officers suggested he seek consent for 44.

Planning officer Barry Gavillet said two previous applications for five homes had both been withdrawn and he could not comment on any discussions with other officers.

Mr Gavillet advised the committee, meeting at County Hall, to approve the scheme.

However, after Cllr Huntington raised concerns over extra traffic and road safety issues, councillors went against his recommendation and refused outline planning permission.

The arrogance of these committee members is unbelievable!! They will pass anything in Durham City, no matter how many objections are raised by local residents. But will they allow anything in their own back yard? No, not if it's east of Sherburn Village!!
This committee should be scrapped and separate committees made up of councillors from the main wards in each area established.
Everyone you speak to is up in arms about what they are doing to Durham City , but this lot aren't interested in the City anymore, but they'll protect Shotton Colliery!!
