YOUNGSTERS are hoping to see their designs for a memorial to commemorate the First World War come to fruition in the school grounds.

Sedgefield Community College aims to raise £6,000 to pay for the structure, which would mark the war centenary.

During a First World War-themed learning day on Thursday (July 17), students took part in a range of activities, including cooking trench food, sports drills, and looking at weaponry, army uniforms and war propaganda.

They also created the designs for the proposed monument and teachers created a short-list and the winning work will be selected at a later date.

Rachel Ripley, English teacher at Sedgefield Community College, who organised the event, said: “The event was a long time in the making and I think the kids got a lot out of it.

“We hope to get the monument up as soon as we can get the money. We have had some fantastic designs.

“Everything went really well so hopefully we can do this event again next year and the pupils can try different taster sessions.”
