A DARLINGTON care home manager has urged older people living alone in the community to take extra care during the hot weather.

Despite a mixed weather forecast, temperatures are expected to remain in the high 20s Celsius over the weekend.

Joe Patterson, manager of Elderwood Care home in Westmoreland Street, will be taking extra steps to ensure that his staff and residents are staying cool and keeping hydrated in the heat.

He said the risks of dehydration and heat stroke among older people are high in the hot weather.

Mr Patterson said: “We are urging the wider community to keep a close eye on elderly neighbours and their older relatives who may live alone and are more vulnerable in the heat.

“We recommend older people stay hydrated and keep out of the sunlight as much as possible.

"In these temperatures, it’s important to avoid caffeinated drinks as they are dehydrating.

"Drink plenty of cold fluids like water and fruit juices.

“Try to avoid hot meals where possible and instead eat salads and fruit, as these foods are water based so will help you stay hydrated.”

Public Health England has the following advice for staying safe in the hot weather:

* Try to stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the say, usually from 11am to 3pm;

* Wear light, loose-fitting clothes;

* Do not leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals.
