TECH-SAVVY students were taught how to turn their ideas into reality by designing their own apps.

Pupils at Hummersknott Academy, in Darlington, worked with IT staff from Atos, based in Faverdale, to design and develop their own app.

The group of year 9 students were first introduced to the skills and tools needed to create an app, and were then put into groups and given an hour to prepare their idea, choose a name and its purpose.

They then demonstrated their ideas to the rest of the class, with the best idea being declared the winner.

The day was organised during the school’s activities week as part of STEMNET, a scheme which aims to bring North-East businesses and schools together to educate pupils in science, maths, engineering and technology related industries.

Dr Richard Willis, head of physics and school coordinator of the day said: “This represents a fantastic opportunity for students to gain experience of the exciting commercial developments of app design and who knows may help one of them on their way to their first million.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of Atos in facilitating this day.”
