POLICE in Cyprus have confirmed that no one will be charged following the death of a North-East girl who drowned in a swimming pool.

The youngster had arrived on the island for a family holiday at the weekend, and tragedy struck just a day later.

She got into difficulty on Monday (June 16) while swimming at the Evalena Hotel Apartments, in the holiday resort of Protaras, on the island's south-eastern coast.

Efforts to revive the girl, who has not been named, were unsuccessful.

It is understood the girl's family has links to both south-west Durham and Darlington.

George Economou, a spokesman for Cypriot police, told the Famagusta Gazette no charges would be brought as a result of the tragedy.

He said: "It seems this is a very sad, tragic accident."

Mr Economou told reporters no lifeguards were on duty at the time of the incident.

He added: "The pool area was well posted with warning signs."

A post-mortem examination, conducted at Larnaca General Hospital, confirmed the cause of death as drowning.
