Two arrests after violence breaks out in Darlington town centre after England game

Darlington and Stockton Times: Fighting broke out in the street outside the William Stead pub and close to The Northern Echo offices on Priestgate Fighting broke out in the street outside the William Stead pub and close to The Northern Echo offices on Priestgate

TWO people were arrested after a large-scale disturbance outside of a Darlington town centre pub.

The violence, which came not long after the end of England's World Cup defeat to Uruguay last night, was outside of the William Stead and close to The Northern Echo's offices on Priestgate.

Around 20 to 30 people spilled out onto the street as scuffles broke out between men and women.

The incident calmed somewhat before flaring up again just as police arrived en masse after the alarm was raised.

A number of people ran off and were pursued by officers on foot and in cars.

Bus drivers had to pick their way through the crowd as the fracas continued around them.

A spokesman for Darlington police said two men had been arrested on suspicion of public order offences. He said CCTV was used in the investigation.

Disgraceful drunken behaviour by Stella fuelled thugs.

Uruguay (pop. 3.3m) outclassed England (pop. 56.1m)

Our best place ranking in the World Cup since we hosted it in 1966 was 4th in 1990. Why do people get so delusional that our national football team is anything more than medoicre on the world stage?

Would any of the people commenting turn down the wages these guys are paid??? No.

Dont blame the players. blame the money / media hungry chairman.

Maybe if the same owners / chairman invested more in home grown talent the English team would perform better on the world stage.

....this thread is not about football.....

It's about a bunch of drunken idiots (who undoubtedly would add also to the domestic violence figures) who embarrass the town. And let's face it, Darlo is not short of them.

Another reason to stay clear of the place.

How do you know this? Maybe someone insulted another guys mother, or sister, or spilled his pint, or stood on his foot, or barged in at the bar?

Poor journalism followed by muppets who put 2 and 2 together and get 5.

Why did you come back? Maybe you should have stayed in Appleby - no doubt making the locals lives out there a misery.

Darlington has been nice and quiet this past week or so....Alas, all good things.......

Please go back, and take the rest of them with you.

Kind regards, the decent, law abiding, tax paying people of Darlington
