A NORTH-EAST environmental group has had its achievements recognised nationally

Darlington Friends of the Earth beat more than 220 groups from across the country to be named finalists in the group of the year category at the national Earthmovers awards, which celebrate grassroots environmental activism in the UK.

The group won praise for their community involvement, which has seen them take part in the annual Darlington Community Carnival and talk to local students during the national Make a Difference Day. They will also be running workshops at this year’s Festival of Thrift.

The group has also given guided bee walks, helped to plant a bee world in the town’s Maidendale Nature Reserve, and backed the national Meat Free May campaign to encourage people to try vegetarian meals for a month.

Group co-ordinator Kendra Ullyart said: “I am delighted that our dynamic group has been recognised for all that it has achieved.

“We are always looking for ways to make our community a better place. We focus on what helps people be happier and healthier.

“If you want to see your neighbourhood become cleaner and greener, then join Darlington Friends of the Earth and help us make things better.”

The group is currently campaigning for 20mph speed limits in built up areas and will be handing out a Clean British Energy award to a local company who has shown commitment to cutting carbon pollution.

Members of the group also maintain the Darlington Orchard, which distributes free apples to play areas around the borough.
