POLICE are holding an emergency services community event in Northallerton to coincide with a visit by children affected by the Chernobyl disaster.

Officers from the National Police Air Service will bring their helicopter, local police officers, the dog section and the roads policing unit to the event, which is open to all.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance will also be in attendance, along with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and North Yorkshire County Council.

Inspector Chris Galley said: “The day promises to be a fun and exciting event, providing an interesting glimpse into the work of the emergency services.”

The event will be held on Tuesday, June 17, between 1.30pm and 2.30pm, at Northallerton Rugby Club.

The day has been arranged to coincide with the visit of 11 children from Mogilev, in Belarus.

All aged between eight and 13-years-old, they are still affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986, which has contaminated their food and water.

They visit Northallerton for four weeks each year to boost their immune systems and for medical care. The visit is arranged by the charity Friends of Chernobyl Children.
