DETECTIVES investigating a suspicious fire which caused devastating damage to a town centre shop in Bedale, North Yorkshire, have arrested two men.

The fire in the early hours of Friday June 6 caused extensive damage to Belly Buster, takeaway. Four fire engines were involved in fighting the blaze and it was originally feared residents may have been trapped but firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and confirmed it to be empty.

They started fighting the fire from within but had to evacuate the building and work from outside when part of the roof collapsed. Much of the shop was left gutted by the fire.

A 20-year-old man from Northallerton and a 21-year-old Bedale man were arrested in connection with the blaze.

The Northallerton man was released after being given a caution. The Bedale man was released on bail pending ongoing investigations. A further appeal for information has been made by the police, anyone who can help should contact Northallerton CID on 101, select option two and ask for Gary Smith Owen, or email gary.smithowen@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.
