WORK has started on building a £1.2m park on former dockland next to the Transporter bridge.

The green space in the Middlehaven area of Middlesbrough is part of its multi-million pound regeneration should be partly open by the end of the year.

The site is now home to Middlesbrough College, Anish Kapoor’s Temenos sculpture, Myplace youth centre and The Gateway, a neurological and spinal rehabilitation unit.

The Homes and Communities Agency is now preparing for the next phase of redevelopment, the Urban Pioneers project will see the creation of 14 serviced plots providing opportunities for individuals or groups to build small schemes on a ‘build now pay later’ basis.

Chris Munro, Senior Area Manager at the Homes and Communities Agency said: “The Park and the Urban Pioneers scheme will help continue the transformation of Middlehaven, building on the development around the dock. Our investment in the park will ensure the quality of the community that will start to be built here in 2015.”
