Residents offered healthy walking alternatives

AN innovative new project encouraging people to make healthier travel choices launches today (Monday, June 2).
Information on Sustrans’ Personalised Travel Planning (PTP) will be posted to 8,000 households across western Stockton and Ingleby Barwick, introducing the project funded by the Big Lottery and Stockton Borough Council.
People will be offered a tailor-made pack of local information on walking, cycling and public transport, to make it easier to switch to these alternatives for more of their everyday journeys.
Paul Morrison Sustrans’ smarter choices coordinator said: “The projects cut local traffic congestion and improve health and wellbeing by encouraging people to make a few changes to their daily travel choices when and where it suits them best.
“Walking or cycling for some of the shorter journeys we make is a great way to incorporate more activity into our daily routines and can often be cheaper and quicker than using the car.”
The introductory information will be followed up with visits from trained staff who will discuss current travel arrangements and offer suggestions on where savings may be made and healthier options taken.
Packs of relevant information will then be tailor made to suit individual needs and delivered to participating households.
Councillor Jim Beall, Stockton Borough Council’s cabinet member for adult services and health, said: “By making just a few changes, people will be able to adopt a healthier lifestyle to improve their fitness, health and wellbeing.
"Walking and cycling are healthy, convenient and cost effective forms of travel, and they are the easiest ways for people to achieve the daily recommended amount of activity to keep healthy.
“The packs contain plenty of information and advice for anyone who would like to incorporate these changes.”
