A CRACKDOWN on law-breaking drivers on a main route into Darlington has resulted in arrests and vehicle seizures.

Durham Constabulary’s road policing unit has been paying extra attention to motorists using Yarm Road after receiving complaints about inconsiderate drivers.

Since February the officers have seized five vehicles; two for no Insurance, one for no documentation and one for disqualified driving.

They have also arrested four motorists for offences such as drink driving, drug possession, and driving while disqualified.

A total of 16 fixed penalty notices have been issued to drivers for not wearing seatbelts, and a further 16 drivers have been reported for offences such as speeding or using mobile phone whilst driving.

Vehicles have also been stopped and searched and a number of intelligence reports have been submitted into police systems.

A Darlington Police spokesman said: “Residents at Bank top PACT (police and communities together) meeting have been really pleased with the outcome of the work from the road policing unit and many residents have commented on how they feel much safer on the roads when they are seeing more marked police cars in the area.”
